The ketogenic diet is a diet that, by way of macronutrient balance (high fat, moderate protein, and very low carbohydrate in comparison to the Standard American Diet) induces the body to burn ketones and fat in addition to glucose for energy. Lucky for us, this flexibility is entirely natural, safe, and beneficial. Who Shouldn’t Follow a Keto Diet Plan? While carbohydrates are not essential for our bodies, there are some people for whom a keto diet plan isn’t ideal. Risks to Note Koche says to hold off until you’ve adapted to keto, which means your body is used to turning to fat for fuel, before adding these high-carb days, as it can slow down the possible benefits and results of being in ketosis. Kizer notes that keto cycling can cause fluctuations in body water, which can lead to dizziness. “It can also be hard on the heart for those with some cardiac conditions,” she adds. Counting calories, fat, and protein intake - for some people, that’s all too complicated. “All you track is carbs in lazy keto,” Kizer says. Meanwhile, regular beer is produced from starch and can contain upwards of 12 grams of carbs in just one can. Regular beer, cocktails and mixed drinks are often high in carbs, loading 10-32 grams per serving. These are best avoided if you’re on a keto diet.

Though keto has been gaining popularity recently thanks to celebrity endorsements and a wealth of diet-adherent Pinterest recipes, this is not the first time a form of it has gone mainstream. “We have been seeing different variations on the low-carb diet for decades,” says Abbey Sharp, a registered dietician and nutrition blogger. “The Atkins diet and the Dukan diet are two variations of a ketogenic diet. Tracking your macros and net carbs can be tricky, so I advise you download a keto app that includes a keto diet calculator. It will help keep you on track. A popular keto supplement are exogenous ketones (popularly called “keto diet pills”) that may help you achieve results earlier as well as remain in that state. One cup of cooked chickpeas also has 10.7 grams of protein, and 9.6 grams of fiber, all of which are great contributions to your nutritional intake. The bottom line: If you want to incorporate beans into your keto routine, you just need to practice pretty careful portion control. Which beans are the most keto-friendly? ’re taking part in the keto diet. But if you want to spread out your carbs throughout several meals instead of eating them all in one cup of black beans (which would also be fine!), here’s the deal. “The only beans that are super keto-friendly are green beans and black soybeans,” explains Gans. You don’t want to reduce the ratio of fat, so the last thing to try (primarily if you’re not losing weight) is to simply eat less of everything. Salad dressings and sauces can also have extra sugar you wouldn’t expect. If you’re out at a restaurant, avoid balsamics, vinaigrettes, honey mustard, and French or Thousand Island dressings since they tend to have more sugar in them. Since many traditional seasonings and sauces aren’t keto-friendly, herbs and spices will become your new best friends in the kitchen. Just make sure they don’t contain any sugars or high-carb fillers - some mixed spice blends do - and are purely the herb or spice itself before you take the spice jar home with you. What’s left is anecdotal evidence and people from all corners of the web - including physicians, nutritionists, and celebrities - raving or ranting about it. “I am open-minded when patients come to us with diets or nutritional trends, especially because I appreciate that they have taken an interest in their health,” said Neel Chokshi, MD, MBA, an associate professor of clinical medicine and medical director of the Sports Cardiology and Fitness Program at Penn Medicine. Many keto fans who don't have epilepsy or diabetes report feeling sharper and more energetic on the diet. The end result of the “ketone diet” is staying fueled off of circulating high ketones (which are also sometimes called ketone bodies) - which is what’s responsible for altering your metabolism in a way that some people like to say turns you into a “fat-burning machine.” Both in terms of how it feels physically and mentally, along with the impact it has on the body, being in ketosis is very different than a “glycolytic state,” where blood glucose (sugar) serves as the body’s energy source. So, is ketosis bad for you? Absolutely not. If anything, it’s the reverse. Many consider burning ketones to be a much “cleaner” way to stay energized compared to running on carbs and sugar day in and day out. And remember, this state is not to be confused with ketoacidosis, which is a serious diabetes complication when the body produces excess ketones (or blood acids). The goal is to keep you in this fat-burning metabolic state, in which you will lose weight until you reach your ideal set point. What is the keto diet? The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. It also includes non-starchy vegetables, like brussels sprouts, cauliflower, squash, and many others. The diet limits high carbohydrate foods, including grains, root vegetables, fruits, and sugar. In the early 1920s, medical doctors created the diet as a treatment for epilepsy in children. The word ketogenic means the body produces ketones. Ketones are a type of acid that your body produces when you don’t have enough insulin in your body to use glucose for energy. Instead, your body uses fat for energy and produces ketones. The primary goal of the diet is ketosis, which is when your body uses fat for energy instead of carbs. How many carbs do you eat on the keto diet? Generally, a low-carb diet is when you eat 100-150 grams of carbs per day. The keto diet goes even lower because the goal is to get into ketosis. Most people reach ketosis if they eat 50 grams or less of carbs per day.|Calories still count on the keto diet. However most dieters report reduced appetite and are able to “feel full” while eating less. Feeing full while eating less? Yup, you read that right. Are bananas keto friendly? While bananas are not an “unhealthy” food, their high carbohydrate count (28 net carbs for a small banana!) make them suboptimal for those on a keto diet. If you’re trying out keto and love bananas, consider eating only a small portion of a banana and slicing it very thinly, or substitute bananas for banana-flavored extracts instead. Can I still have cheat days? Yes you can! Many people who are “keto-adapted” (have consistently maintained deep ketosis) report being able to stay in ketosis despite having a rare high-carb treat like beer, sushi or cake. But proceed with caution - “cheating” on a regular basis or designating a weekly cheat day is highly discouraged on keto. Due to the high fat concentration of keto foods you can easily regain the weight (or gain more weight) if you’re not actually in ketosis and cheating regularly. Like all diets - the better you adhere to the diet the better (and faster!) your results. But won’t eating fat make me… Nope! That’s a common misconception. But don’t just take our word for it. There is no literature or long-term evidence that implies keto is not a safe lifestyle or diet. The ketogenic diet requires eating your macronutrients at a ratio of 60 percent fat, 30-35 percent protein and 5-10 percent carbohydrates. For someone consuming 2,000 calories a day, they would only be allowed to consume 20-25 grams of carbohydrates. Eating carbs at such low levels requires staying away from foods such as rice, pasta, bread, fruit and potatoes. However, you can eat foods high in dietary fat such as meats, nuts, cheese, avocados and eggs. How does the keto diet work? Avoiding eating carbohydrates and increasing the amount of dietary fats you eat for a long period of time (1-2 weeks) causes your body to change its metabolism and enter a condition called ketosis. And, we all remember the Atkins era. People lost weight fast. On a keto diet as well, people tend to see quick results. That's because my intro to this seemingly new plan was when I worked in a hospital, where ketogenic diets were specifically used as a medical nutrition therapy for pediatric patients with seizure disorders, for whom medication was no longer effective. Is there anyone who should not try this diet? Anyone with a history of kidney stones, acute pancreatitis, and/or carnitine deficiency shouldn’t try the diet. A lot of researchers are interested in how the keto diet can be used for diabetes. We predict we’ll see more peer-reviewed studies about the effects of the keto diet on diabetes in the near future. Can you follow the keto diet for long-term? It’s not easy to eat just 50 g of carbs per day. It’s a lifestyle change that often affects those that eat with you. And you can’t take days off when you’re trying to maintain ketosis. Without large peer-reviewed clinical trials, many of the benefits of the diet are based on individual outcomes. Is the keto diet safe for everyone with type 2 diabetes? This diet is not suggested if you have kidney disease (high protein intake can affect kidney functions). The keto-buzz is everywhere you look these days. Nutrition coaches are offering keto plans, meal prep companies have debuted keto food lines, and well-renowned blogs are digging in to what this diet is and why people are so dang curious about it. A lot of celebrities are raving about the benefits they’ve seen from shifting to a ketogenic diet, including a few Kardashians, runway models, actors, and athletes. Naturally, when people in the spotlight adopt a specific lifestyle habit, the rest of society becomes interested to try it out too. As a compliment to our stance on keto, I’m hoping to help clear some noise around the keto diet with an exploration of its history, what (and who) it helps, what the long-term prognosis of a ketogenic diet looks like, and how the diet might fit into your life. FIRST THING’S FIRST: WHAT’S KETO? The ketogenic diet is an extremely high fat and low carb diet in which people methodically consume 75% of their calories from fat, 15-20% from protein, and 5-10% from carbohydrates. Let me repeat this. Do NOT WORRY about macros during your first week. It can become overwhelming really quickly. Cut out high glycemic foods like bread, pasta, and rice, but believe it or not, because there are so many great substitutions you won't miss these starchy foods. And by substituting these foods with high fat low carb foods, you won't get hungry. Eat lots of non-starchy veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, and green leafy vegetables. Your proteins will be moderate, with only 15 to 30% of your total intake coming from healthy proteins like chicken, beef, fish or tofu. Fats will make up the rest of your daily intake. These should come good fats like nuts or nut butters, olive oil, avocados, and cheese. Here are some of the low carb fruits, vegetables, and nuts you can eat on keto. Cut out potatoes, pasta, bread, rice, grains, beans, and sugar and don't eat too many fruits. The keto diet boasts a ton of transformation stories-even celebs like Jenna Jameson, Al Roker, and Vanessa Hudgens have dabbled in it (and have the before-and-after photos to prove it). But um, it's still hard work-revamping your diet by almost totally cutting out carbs is a drastic change for your body (especially if you're a pizza and pasta lover), so there's got to be an easier way to get into ketosis (a.k.a., that state where your body burns fat for fuel instead of carbs), right? Maybe with special keto supplements? Hold on, keto supplements? Exogenous ketones or ketone salts (a.k.a. Together, these reportedly work to increase the amount of fat in your body and kick you into ketosis (a.k.a. McWhorter. Ketone supplements also allegedly block carbohydrates from being absorbed or metabolized, says McWhorter. Those claims are, well, just claims-"If you want to waste your money and potentially consume adulterated products with little or no research backing them, then sure, go right ahead and get those keto supplements," says McWhorter. And because there's such limited peer-reviewed research to support using them, they might even be harmful to your health in the long run, says Michelle Milgrim, RD, a nutritionist at Northwell Health in New Hyde Park, New York. But there haven't been any long-term studies looking at these outcomes over time, she adds. Side effects from keto supplements are also a red flag. Well, can keto supplements do anything at all? While keto-specific supplements, like exogenous ketones, do temporarily elevate the level of ketones in the blood, says Amanda Maucere, RD, a nutritionist at Lung Health Institute in Tampa, Florida, the overall impact on the body is not the same as getting there via your dietary choices. Essentially, the keto diet for beginners works by “tricking” the body into acting as if its fasting (while reaping intermittent fasting benefits), through a strict elimination of glucose that is found in carbohydrate foods. Today the standard keto diet goes by several different names, including the “low-carbohydrate” or “very-low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet”(LCKD or VLCKD for short). At the core of the classic keto diet is severely restricting intake of all or most foods with sugar and starch (carbohydrates). These foods are broken down into sugar (insulin and glucose) in our blood once we eat them, and if these levels become too high, extra calories are much more easily stored as body fat and results in unwanted weight gain. However, when glucose levels are cut off due to low-carb intake, the body starts to burn fat instead and produces ketones that can be measured in the blood (using urine strips, for example). Keto diets, like most low carb diets, work through the elimination of glucose.
It’s been around for nearly a century, and has its roots in the medical world: In the 1920s, epilepsy researchers found that increased levels of ketones in their patients resulted in fewer seizures, and the diet is still a widely accepted treatment for epilepsy today. There’s also some evidence that a ketogenic diet has therapeutic potential for a wide array of symptoms and diseases, including cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome, neurological conditions, diabetes, and even acne. So how did it become a trendy weight-loss diet? Though keto has been gaining popularity recently thanks to celebrity endorsements and a wealth of diet-adherent Pinterest recipes, this is not the first time a form of it has gone mainstream. “We have been seeing different variations on the low-carb diet for decades,” says Abbey Sharp, a registered dietician and nutrition blogger. “The Atkins diet and the Dukan diet are two variations of a ketogenic diet. “For example, one cup of cooked chickpeas provides 35 grams of carbs,” Sheth says. If you’re only allowing yourself 50 grams of carbs per day, max, adding beans can mean that will add up fast. The good news? One cup of cooked chickpeas also has 10.7 grams of protein, and 9.6 grams of fiber, all of which are great contributions to your nutritional intake. The bottom line: If you want to incorporate beans into your keto routine, you just need to practice pretty careful portion control. Which beans are the most keto-friendly? ’re taking part in the keto diet. But if you want to spread out your carbs throughout several meals instead of eating them all in one cup of black beans (which would also be fine!), here’s the deal. “The only beans that are super keto-friendly are green beans and black soybeans,” explains Gans. What makes them so special? In addition, routine consumption of foods that are high in saturated fat (think bacon, butter, and cheese) can ultimately lead to high LDL (harmful) cholesterol levels-a known marker of increased heart event risk. 35% increase in their LDL levels on average. The Medifast diet has been around since the '80s, and while this carbohydrate-controlled, low-fat diet is known to help you drop weight fast, it may not be good for your heart. With more than 40 portion-controlled and fortified meals to choose from, this calorie-restrictive diet is marketed toward people who need to lose a lot of weight and don't have time to cook or prepare their own meals. While this may sound appealing to many, Klodas warns that a whole day's worth of meals and snacks could cause you to consume three times the recommended amount of protein. Not to mention, the meals are heavily processed. Referred to as "yo-yo dieting," significant fluctuations in weight can double your risk of heart disease, Klodas says. But if you like eating a normal breakfast, then it’s still fairly simple: bacons, eggs, avocado, and then one or two keto coffees. If you have 3 eggs, that’s 15g of fat. Your goal is to get at least one third of your fat for the day first thing in the morning so you don’t have to worry about it as much later. To figure out that number, you can calculate your TDEE and then figure out what 70% of that is in grams of fat… Since most of the breakfast foods we’ve looked at are in the 15g of fat range, we can make the rule simpler: divide your goal weight by 30, round up, and thats how many “fat servings” you should have for breakfast. This seems like a lot of thinking right now, but once you figure out what your number is and find a breakfast mix that you like you never have to think about it again.|Keto dieters drastically cut carbohydrates to about 10 percent of their daily diet, which in some cases can be just 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. That amount of carbohydrates is equivalent to one slice of white bread per day, according to Feller. Nutritionists also stress that followers of a keto diet should get their fat intake from healthy fats like olive oils and nuts. Samantha Kafedzic, 31, has lost 17 pounds since starting on a keto diet four weeks ago. Kafedzic, who admits she now eats “very different” meals from her daughter, said she feels better overall in addition to the weight loss. “I have more energy with this one running around,” Kafedzic said, pointing to her daughter. “My workouts are so much better. The key to being successful on the keto diet is getting about 20 percent of your calories from protein and eating lots of fat. For some keto followers, the amount of fat could equal more than 70 percent of their diet. The amount of fat someone following the keto diet may consume in one day could be more than five times the recommended intake for daily fat for the average American, according to Feller. The diet’s critics argue that it is nearly impossible to follow long-term, could lead to muscle loss and could deprive your brain of its preferred source of fuel, carbohydrates. Feller agrees that the keto diet is not a diet she would recommend following for an extended period of time. “The jury is out on if that is safe for the long term,” she said. “What most studies say is that you can follow a ketogenic diet for some months.
